Bread, Pasta, Rice, and Fruit:

  • Foods in the Bread, Pasta, Rice, and Fruit category are calorie-dense, so limit your intake of foods in this category to three small servings per day.
Vegetables:

  • A large salad is awesome.  However, make sure you limit the amount of dressing to one or two tablespoons.  Using too much salad dressing can negate the entire reason for eating salad in the first place. :)  Select clear dressings like a vinaigrette instead of the creamier, cheesier ones because vinaigrettes tend to be less fatty.  Also, try dipping your fork in the dressing to get flavor on your tongue without pouring on too many calories.
  • Steamed or raw vegetables have very few calories, which means you can pretty much eat them until you are no longer hungry.  A plate filled with raw vegetables has around 100 calories! 
  • Avoid butter or cream-based sauces.  Lemon juice, soy sauce, and mustard are great options for adding flavor to your vegetable without adding fat calories.
Proteins:
  • Select lean meats like turkey, chicken, or pork over fatty red meats.
  • The serving size of meat in your meal should be no larger than the palm of your hand (approximately 3 to 4 ounces).
  • Broil, grill, or bake.  Avoid frying your meat!
  • Avoid cream sauces and gravy.
  • If meat is not in your diet, try eating tempeh, tofu, low-fat dairy products, and legumes for protein.
Fats:
  • Avoid saturated and trans-fats in red meat, full-fat dairy products, and processed foods.
  • Avocados, raw nuts, flaxseeds, and olive oil are great sources of essential fatty acids.  Make sure you watch your portions by keeping them small, since fat is extremely dense and has more than twice the calories per gram as protein and carbohydrates.
Beverages:
  • Drink a glass of water 30 minutes before eating a meal will help curb your appetite.
  • To improve digestion, avoid having a drink with your meal.  However, if you want to have something to drink with your meal, limit it to a glass of wine, juice, non-fat milk, or water, which is the best choice.
  • Avoid soda, beer, and hard liquor, as all are extremely calorie-dense.  Make sure you limit diet beverages to one per day, as your body's pH levels can be negatively impacted by consuming more per day.
  • Coffee and tea are ok to drink in moderation, with tea being the better choice.  Try avoiding cream and sugar. 
Finally, Dessert:
  • While you are working on transforming your body, step away from the dessert tray.  Remember your goal and simply step away.
  • If, however, you must have dessert, try going with a cup of fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth.  If some fruit is not available and your really want to have dessert, go ahead to have it, but try to eat only one-third to one-half of what you would normally eat.

Make sure every meal keeps the appropriate ratio of calories from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats fairly even.  A guiding principle is to shoot for 40% of your calories to come from carbohydrates, 30% from protein, and 30% from fat.

Choosing the right Foods:
  • Replaced processed foods with fresh vegetables. (This will help you lose weight)
  • Choose skinless white meat rather than red meat.
  • Eat egg whites rather than whole eggs since egg whites have less fat.
  • When eating a meal that might be high in fat, i.e. pizza, or carbohydrates, i.e. pasta, eat only half of what you would normally consume.  They key is to not overeat.
  • Select low-density, high-fiber foods, whenever possible.

Control Your Portions and Calories to Burn Fat

In general, you should eat until you are satisfied, not until you feel full.  Whenever you eat at a restaurant, it is not necessary for you to clean the plate.  Especially, since the portions served at restaurants exceed the recommended serving size.  You should limit lean protein to about 3 ounces (the size of your palm or a deck of card.)  If you order a salad, make sure you don't ruin it with too much salad dressing.

The Equation

Daily exercise will increase the amount of calories you burn each day.  Whenever you eat fewer calories than you burn, BAM! - you'll burn excess stored fat.  This is a scientifically proven fact that never fails.  

How to use The Equation to your Advantage

Calories in:  The first thing you need to do is regulate how many calories you consume.  If you are attempting to lose fat, consuming 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day is as low as you'll want to go.  If you go below 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day, your body will think it is starving and your metabolism will slow down.  Set a goal to eat 500 calories per day less than you burn; this will result in losing 1 pound per week since 3,500 calories equals 1 pound.  You should start with a diet consuming 1,200 to 2,000 calories per day, depending on your goal.

The only time you'll need to add calories is when you feel the need for additional energy.  Remember, food is fuel.  Note:  This is a general guideline for the people reading this post.  For more specific details about your personal caloric intake needs, I recommend you contact a Registered Dietician.)

Calories out:  The second thing you need to do is determine approximately how many calories your body needs each day to function.  You can search the internet and found calculators which use your body weight and lifestyle to determine the number of calories you should consume each day.  Once you've determined the recommended number of calories you need each day, you can use this formula to calculate your daily calorie deficit: 

Calories burned minus Calories eaten equals Calorie deficit.  
Example:  2,000 calories burned - 1,500 calories eaten = 500 calorie deficit

Once you've determined the estimated number of calories your body needs, make sure you consume less than that to force your body to burn up its stored fat.  You lose fat by forcing your body to use its stored fat as "energy."

Here are few of examples of what your weight loss will look like with different calorie deficits:

450 calories = lose 1/8 pound each day, 11 lbs of fat in 90 days
900 calories = lose 1/4 pound each day, 22 lbs of fat in 90 days
1,100 calories = lose 1/3 pound each day, 30 lbs of fat in 90 days
1,600 calories = lose 1/2 pound each day, 45 lbs of fat in 90 days

The Calories Deficit method has been used repeatedly with success.  This is a good method to use if you have a specific weight loss goal in mind.  The key is to be very disciplined about your calorie intake.

"I decided to take a quick updated photo... I pulled one of the photos from a time when I was at my heaviest and then took this one today... These are the facts concerning my appearance change... "I have only been taking SF for just over a month and I am very glad I started. I was diagnosed with depression, severe social anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, panic attacks, PTSD back in November of 2012 and put on many medications also seeing a therapist once a week with EMDR treatments. "Technically I've been on Skinny Fiber for two months, but this is a month and one week apart after I was FULLY FULLY FULLY committed. So the first pic was taken on June 3rd and the second was on July 8th.

Here is my story:
In fourth grade, I was bullied intensely until 6th grade and it changed my life. They made fun of a lot of things, but one that sticks in my mind was my weight. I've always been the ugly duckling, the fat kid growing up. In 7th grade, they stopped because they got into sports and started hanging with the popular kids in higher grades, and I completely quit speaking to everyone. For those who know me, you aren't gonna believe this, but I wasn't even be able to make eye contact with people. I would walk with my head down, didn't speak a lot at all, and when I did I wouldn't have much to say. Even though the bullying stopped, it terrified me that if I showed my true colors, I would get made fun of. I developed an eating disorder at 13 (2005) and it continued off and on until I was 20 (2012). I weighed 174 my senior year of high school, the heaviest I ever weighed and I decided to make a positive change and try to quit my disorder. So softball started, I started drinking a lot of water, ate healthy, and I dropped about 10-15 pounds. Then I discovered Adipex. My best friend ever! I lost around 40 more pounds from that, but it came with baggage. I got severe migraines every other day, I would only go to the bathroom once every 2 or 3 weeks, it almost broke my husband (boyfriend/fiance at the time) up, and I would just gain the weight back right after I got off. I also want to live long enough to see my grandkids graduate and even my great-grandkids graduation. I wish this stuff was around back then, because I would've been on it in a heartbeat. "My personal weight loss & health restoration journey ...
A little over 4 years ago, I had had two car accidents that pretty much robbed me of all the strength I had previously had, and I noticed that the weaker my muscles became, the more health problems I started experiencing. I did not start out on a "weight loss journey" so to speak, more of a "become the healthiest I can be with the injuries I sustained" journey.
I started off with nothing but walking....and walking...and walking....it was all my doctor would agree to. Once I was finally at a place where my doctor approved me to start actually exercising, my investment included Bodylastics resistance bands, a stability ball, a TRX Suspension Trainer, along with changing my eating lifestyle. I did not invest in a lot of supplements or a gym membership, but after awhile I did buy a big jug of protein powder to make shakes with. (oh, yeah, and the only other thing I invested in was a very good yoga mat!)
The yoga mat was an absolute must because I had lost my sense of balance and exercising without the mat was dangerous! Lunges for me were done on the mat between two kitchen chairs to catch me when I toppled over. The stability ball also was a god-send in developing my core and lower back muscles and bring back my balance.
As I slowly got stronger, I incorporated the resistance bands and TRX, took a few TRX classes at my local gym, hired a "trainer" to get me started and continued to cut out unhealthy foods. The biggest and best thing I did for myself however, was READ and EDUCATE myself on nutritional labels, exercise, different diets, learned how to do the exercises, bought health & fitness magazines, cut out pictures of the beautiful women that I admired and taped them to the wall. They were my daily inspiration to get off my arse when I hurt so bad I wanted to give up, when I was so depressed I did not want to get out of bed, when I craved every food in the kitchen and just wanted to binge more than I cared about the end result.... I felt I was finally on my way to being “normal” again, when a very deep personal tragedy last fall plunged me into severe depression...
I slept away my days and nights, ate everything and anything...didn’t leave my place or go out in public...didn’t even get dressed most days ... I became what I never thought would ever happen to me ... then about 5 months later, I “woke up” and really saw myself in the mirror.. I had gained almost 30 lbs, was sitting at 31% body fat, and none of my clothes would fit me. I slid deeper into depression and lost myself.

I've always been an active somewhat in shape guy. However, back in December 2012, I remember getting an 'unintended' glimpse of myself in this mirror we have in our room and I literally thought to myself, "man…you look like you 6 months pregnant!" I attempted to shrug it off and carry on like nothing happened but I soon noticed that I was starting to feel self-conscious because I was now definitely heavier than I'd ever been. I would be extra quick to throw on a t-shirt around my wife to avoid the chance that she might notice I was "expecting" (….as if she hadn't already noticed anyway). I even became more aware of how, when out in public, I found myself holding in my stomach throughout the day to further conceal the new potbelly I was toting around under my baggier that usual clothes. It was all these things that finally convinced me it was time to get back in shape.

However, I had 3 major dilemmas standing in the way of me getting back in shape: First, because I'm older now my METABOLISM has definitely slowed & is nothing like it used to be. Second, with the demands of family, work, and other miscellaneous responsibilities, I just don't have the TIME to devote to getting in shape like I did in the past. And 3rd, I was still EATING the way I've always eaten. Just to give you an idea of how much I LOVE to eat, my family nickname is "Mikey" which comes from a cereal commercial that goes "Give it to Mikey! He likes it. He eats anything!" In the past I was able to eat like this because I had an active lifestyle that allowed me to burn ridiculous calories regularly enough to offset my aggressive eating style. Well, as my responsibilities picked up, my active lifestyle fell off…all while my aggressive eating habits continued. And that's exactly how I ended up with an unattractive gut. I remember weighing myself right around Christmas only to find that I was 230lbs. I'd never been this heavy! My "normal, comfortable" weight is 175lbs!! So for me to be 230lbs, that was definitely the final wake up call I needed.
